Collage of the 30 Paintings In 30 Days Challenge - The Bird Series by Mary Beth Brath

The Bird Series by Mary Beth Brath

The 2015 Leslie Saeta 30 Paintings In 30 Days Challenge is complete! For the past 30 days, I have disciplined myself to create a painting a day. No excuses. I choose a theme of common birds that I have spotted over the years. This took away the stress of deciding what to paint every day. The list of birds was written down on paper in the month of December. I decided to make them all the same size on the same substrate, 6x6" acrylic paint on canvas paper. My drafting table was organized and ready to go. I had several of my own books on birding to use as reference, a few of my own images and of course I researched online. The basic shape and color patterns were studied. Then the composition and design came as I did the painting. Some are silly. Some more serious. All are fun. Enjoy.

Stay tuned for exhibit information to see this series in person. The internet is fun to view artwork, but original art must be seen in person to see the correct color, brushwork and texture.

Thank you - MB

Thank you to all of the followers on facebook and blogger. You are what kept me going through the month. Thank you Leslie Saeta for organizing the challenge and making the sharing process so easy.

Painting No. 26

Today's bird is the Common Loon. Did you know that loons have a hard time standing since their legs are so far back? This is why you always see photos and artwork of this bird while they are lying in their nest or floating in the water. They nest right next to the water's edge so they don't have to walk.

Painting No. 25

Today's bird is the Black Crowned Night Heron. I have only seen one of these herons. It was about 25 years ago at my husband's family marina in Southern New Jersey. I was so fascinated watching the large, clunky bird roost in a cherry tree that was on a tiny island in the lagoon.

Painting No. 21

Today's bird is the Eastern Bluebird. One time when I was plein air painting in Perry County PA, I was sitting on the ground in a field painting a landscape with a bluebird box in the scene. Two bluebirds were flying in and out of the box and happily playing. I was in heaven. Then I realized I was sitting just inches from a pile of deer pellets. So happy I did not sit in the pellets!

Painting No. 17

Today's bird is a Cedar Waxwing. Over 10 years ago I was visiting Cape May County in New Jersey and my father-in-law's neighbor had a scrub pine with a flock of cedar waxwings flitting about the branches. Up until then I had only seen one or two at a time. To see several right next to me at eye level was incredible.

Painting No. 16

I was not very excited about painting a turkey. When I see them in the wild, many times they just look messy and blah. Turns out, this was one of my favorites to paint so far. Again, the digital image of the painting is too cool and the background looks greener than the actual painting. The background is really a warm olive.

The Great Blue Heron looks so massive when in flight...because he is massive. When he is startled while fishing in a small stream he can give a hiker quite a scare. That hiker would be me.

Painting No. 13

The Catbird makes a call that is similar to the sound of a cat. We have a few that nest in our rhododendrons and they will come within 3 feet of me while I sit on the porch. The coloring of this image is off on my computer monitor. The actual painting has a warm buttery background that plays very well off the gray bird. Not sure why I could not get a good digital image.

Painting No. 7
I remember the first time a saw a Scarlet Tanager like it was yesterday. It was in the late 1980s and I was bird watching off of my parents' deck. This streak of flaming red flew over the porch and into the neighbor's tree. When I focused my binoculars on the bird, I thought for sure it was loose from an exotic pet store (ok...I was a teenager then). I ran in the house to tell of my discovery. After I researched the bird, I couldn't believe it was common. I have only seen 4 or 5 since that day.

Dinner At Low Tide by Mary Beth Brath

 Painting No. 6
My husband is from Southern New Jersey and I have been fortunate to enjoy the shore most of my life. Phillip's family owned a marina on a bay and at low tide the mud in the lagoon would attract Snowy Egrets. Being a "birder", I would love to sit on the dock and watch the egrets pull various creatures out of the mud. I found it so ironic how these brilliant white sophisticated birds would eat such a nasty looking meal while standing in the mud. Oh how I love nature.

 Painting No. 5
I thought about painting the Blue Jay in an aggressive pose but his beauty won me over. These guys put on a great show in our backyard. They screech and swoop at the other birds but I still think they are one of the most beautiful birds in our region.

 Painting No. 3
The Black Capped Chickadee is a common companion of mine when I paint plein air. In front of our family cabin we have a row of pine trees that have succumbed to various "growths". The chickadees love crawling around the branches and filling their stomachs with whatever chickadees eat.

A Little Night Music (Whip Poor Will) by Mary Beth Brath

I have taken the challenge by Leslie Saeta to complete 30 paintings in 30 days. Each painting will be 6x6" on canvas paper. I picked a theme of birds to keep me focused. The 30 birds chosen as subject matter are all birds that I have spotted over the years. Most are common in my region.

Painting No. 2
Ahh Yes - that lovely sound as evening falls in Hemlock Valley. Many people do not know about the Whip-Poor-Will. This robin sized bird is nocturnal and during the day he is camouflaged in a pattern resembling tree bark and foliage. At dusk, if you are lucky, you will hear his lovely call that sounds like he is saying "whip poor will". Guests of our family cabin in North Western PA have enjoyed whip poor wills for over 30 years now. I have never actually seen the bird. Last year while hiking near our cabin, I startled a bird out of the leaves on the ground that quickly flew away. At the time I thought maybe it was a quail or even grouse. Now looking back, it could have been a whip poor will. I only caught a glimpse of him as he flew through the branches. Hmmm. Maybe this year.
